December 2013 Meeting - Recap

Our December meeting this past Saturday at Ryco was jammed packed. We opened up formal membership for the 2014 year and we are off to a great start with sign-ups. If you were not there you will be able to sign up next month or see our "membership page" on the right side of the Blog to download forms and mail in.

We all enjoyed our Fat Quarter Swap coordinated by Coco, who came up with a very clever and imaginative way to select our gift. Thanks Coco! Thanks also to Ryco for the surprise gift certificate for one lucky winner!  Here are some photos:

Next on the schedule was "Show and Tell".  Despite the busy holiday season, we had several people showing off their creations......

Our challenge for this month was to bring in a 10 x 10 Free Motion Quilting Square.  There was lots of oohing and ah-hing over the variety of designs we all brought in.  Tara offered to gather them all together into a binder for future meetings as a reference tool for ideas.  We had fun discussing the thought process behind our designs.  Here are the samples we all shared:

January Challenge:  In keeping with the Free Motion Quilting Theme, we are asking everyone to use only Whole Cloth to show off your blossoming Free Motion Quilting skills. It can be table runner, small quilt, pillow or larger if you are so inclined. Be BRAVE and FEARLESS!

As 2013 is nearing an end, and some of us are assuming our new responsibilities as RIMQG Board Members, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Carole Ann and Tara for all their hard work and dedication in getting RIMQG off the ground and running!  We are all very excited to be a part of this wonderful group and are looking forward to a terrific 2014 Quilting Year.

Next Meeting: January 11, 2014  2:00 pm at Ryco, Lincoln, RI

Happy Holidays and Happy Quilting!

November Meeting Recap

We had a lot to cover at the November meeting! If you weren't able to make it, here's a recap:

1) We introduced the RIMQG's first Board of Directors:

      Carole Ann Penney, President
      Kathryn LeBlanc, Vice President
      Tara Coogan, Treasurer
      Jodi Meenan, Secretary
      Coco LeClaire-Conway, Membership
Karen McCann and Sherri Noel, Communications Administrators

2) Tara did a free-motion quilting demonstration of some designs, ranging from basic stippling to dogwood flower. Here's some action shots of "wonky boxes":

2) There is a Free-Motion quilting challenge due in January. The parameters are to create a whole-cloth quilt (or table runner, wall hanging, etc.) and get creative with your free-motion quilting. Whole-cloth means the quilt will have no patchwork; we suggest using a solid fabric or a subtle print that will allow your quilting to be the star of the show. If you need some inspiration or have questions, take it to our Facebook page and get feedback from the group.

3) To prepare for the challenge due in January, we are practicing by bringing a 10x10 mini quilt sandwich to the December meeting (no binding necessary) with a free-motion design that gets you out of your comfort zone. Try something new! See the photos from the demonstration for reference. Our goal is to toss all of the mini's on the table at the next meeting and see what the group came up with. The mini's will be collected and we will make a booklet of sorts, from which we can refer to if we need quilting design inspiration. Bring as many as you'd like!

4) Here are some links to some our favorite FMQ guru's:

5) Here are photos of the November challenge, Design Your Own Quilt:

6) And last but not least; show and tell!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the meeting!
Please keep an eye out for our newsletter with more details about the
membership forms that will be submitted before the end of the year.
Keep on quilting and see you next month!
