June Meeting - Recap

We had a great first birthday celebration this month! Thanks to everyone who came out and contributed supplies and goodies.

Also a big thanks to all the members who helped contribute to our super secret surprise for Carole Ann. Sue and Tina thought it would be a great idea to have members of the guild create congratulation blocks for Carole Ann's wedding that took place in May. The result was beautiful and she loved it!

We had some impressive projects to share at show and tell:

We had a great Paper Piecing demo by Tina. She will be extending the demo to our July meeting so that she can demonstrate the stitching on the template paper.  Until then, if you are excited to jump into paper piecing, Tina recommends the following resources:

Tina's top paper piecing tips:
1. Choose the paper that works best for you: copy paper, vellum, freezer paper, or foundation sheets.
2. Cut your pieces larger than you think you need. Allow more than 1/4" seam allowance. Don't be skimpy!
3. When stitching paper pieced sections or blocks together, use vinyl coated paper clips instead of pins to keep pieces lined up.
4. If your paper rips along a seam line, use Scotch brand Magic tape to make the repair. You can stitch through it and it won't gum up your needle.

Tina recommends anything by Carol Doak, the Mother of Paper Piecing. Carol has a new Craftsy class and lots of free patterns on her website.

Paper Panache is one of Tina's favorite paper piecing sites. The site offers periodic free mystery blocks. It's a fun way to try out more complex patterns. It has great setp-by-step instructions, too.

For our next meeting, we will be reporting on our progress with the Art Spark Challenge! We hope to some some in-progress projects or even just the piece of art you are using as your inspiration for your quilt/project.

Our next meeting is July 13th at 2pm; please bring any finished or works in progress to share! Also, we will get to our "sewing machine share", since we ran out of time at our last meeting. We are curious to know what model machine(s) you use and what you like/dislike about them!

Last but not least!! If you have not done so already, please take a quick minute to fill out our RIMQG survey.  We want to know what you like about our meetings, and what you'd like to see changed for future meetings!

Everyone who fills out the survey will be entered to win one of three gift certificates to Ryco; deadline is July 8th at 5pm.

That's all for now; Happy Quilting! :)
