Tutorial: use Excel to design quilts and calculate yardage

At our October meeting, Nina talked about how she uses Excel to design quilts and calculate yardage. This pretty much blew our minds because we all use Excel but never realized quilt planning was right at our fingertips! Thanks Nina for sending these instructions!

October Meeting Recap

As we prepare to join the Modern Quilt Guild "mothership" (thanks CA!) we announced that we will be covering a few crucial bases at our November meeting:

1) conducting elections for our Board of Directors
2) presenting our guild's bylaws
3) introducing RIMQG membership forms
4) announce what our annual membership dues will be and how they will be collected

Stay tuned for more details! We are all very excited!

Next Challenge
Due at our November meeting are the projects for the "Design Your Own Quilt" challenge.

Look for another blog post with the details from our 3x3 speakers on their process for designing quilts:
1) use Excel to design quilts and calculate yardage
2) use graph paper to sketch quilts, and carry a notebook to jot down quick ideas and inspirations
3) how to brainstorm ideas, answering the question "where do I start?"

Show & Tell
This month we saw some impressive quilts from our members, in addition to some great pieces from a few new faces!

Events & Field Trips

The New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA will feature a talk by Denyse Schmidt on Friday, November 15 at 7pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on their website. If you're interested in going, send an email to Becky so we can coordinate our first guild field trip!

On view at the Museum will also be an exhibit called Roots of Modern Quilting: Fresh Eyes on Old Quilts, which is open from October 10 -December 28.

We also received an invitation from the Boston Modern Quilt Guild and Seacoast Modern Quilt Guilds to join them for a talk by Lizzie House on Saturday, November 23 from 10am-12pm. This would be a great opportunity to connect with other local chapters of the Modern Quilt Guild!

Thanks again to everyone who came out to the meeting this month. Happy quilting and see you soon!

Call for Charity Blocks: Quilts for CO & NM

From one of our members, Amanda:

With the recent flooding and destruction in Colorado and New Mexico, my goal is to bring warmth, love and kindness to those who may be feeling homeless, depressed, and worried about what their future brings. I’m looking for sewers to create quilt blocks to be put together into quilts for the people affected by the flooding. I’d also appreciate donations of supplies, such as fabric, batting, etc.

Block guidelines:
1. Quilt colors will be red, yellow, blue and white. These are the colors of the CO and NM state flags. Fabrics may be solid or print, as long as they are these colors.
2. I'd appreciate help from all skill levels. I'm a beginner sewer, so I encourage even the least experienced to give it a try! I found the Scrappy Trip Along to be a very simple, yet fun, block to do.
3. Blocks should be 12½" tall by whatever length you'd like. This means they may be 12½" by 6" or 12½" by 16" (Scrappy Trip Along becomes 12½" by 12½")
4. Please use quality quilting fabric and thread.

Please mail blocks by November 1st to:

Next Meeting - This Saturday at 2pm!

Meeting this Saturday - 10/5 at 2pm

"3x3" Speakers: As an introduction to the Design Your Own Quilt Challenge due in November, we are having a series of 3 speakers (awesome members of our group!) discuss for 3 minutes each about their design process. We hope this sparks some inspiration if you're having some trouble getting started; or it might just inspire you to test out a new design process!

Show & Tell: Bring something in-progress or finished to share with the group. If you've completed your November challenge project early, please bring that too!

As always, we will be at Ryco!

*Don't forget to check out our Facebook page; it's a great place to stay up to date on news and interact with other members.

See you Saturday!
